Middletown Rotary Welcomes Aquidneck Community Table
The Middletown Rotary Club welcomed Lucien Rosenbloom, Market and Events Manager for Aquidneck Community Table (ACT) to our June 10th meeting. Lucien shared the organization's vision for building a healthier and more equitable food system across Aquidneck Island.
Founded on the belief that everyone deserves access to fresh, healthy food, ACT works to connect residents with local food sources while supporting farmers, gardeners, and community partners. Their programs include community gardens, farmers markets, youth education initiatives, and food-access programs that help make nutritious food more affordable and accessible.
Lucien highlighted ACT's extensive impact across the island, including more than 80 community garden plots, educational programs that engage children from kindergarten through high school, and farmers market initiatives that encourage healthy eating while supporting local agriculture. Members also learned about ACT's SNAP Bonus Bucks program, which helps families maximize their food benefits while purchasing fresh produce from local vendors.
A major focus of the presentation was ACT's exciting new project, The Table, which will become Aquidneck Island's first year-round food and community hub. The facility is envisioned as a welcoming gathering place featuring a year-round marketplace, children's learning and play spaces, wellness and culinary programs, urban agriculture demonstrations, community resources, event space, and shared meals. Designed with equitable access at its core, The Table aims to strengthen community connections while expanding opportunities for food education and healthy living.
Rotarians appreciated learning how ACT is addressing food insecurity while creating lasting community connections through food, education, and local partnerships. The presentation demonstrated how innovative community-based solutions can improve health, strengthen local economies, and build a more resilient future for Aquidneck Island.
