Ferass Sammoura - Alzheimer's Research
Ferass Sammoura received his PhD in Public Health with a concentration of Environmental Health Sciences from Florida International University in 2023. His dissertation research focused on the effects of environmental exposures in neurodegenerative diseases. Specifically, Dr. Sammoura focused on the interplay of organochlorine pesticides DDT and DDE in amyloid pathology, relevant to Alzheimer’s disease. His and his collaborators research is the first to ever discover mechanistic links for organochlorine pesticide exposure in Alzheimer’s disease.
He has received multiple awards for his contributions to the field of environmental neurotoxicology such as the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Paper of the Year award, the Neurotoxicology Specialty Section of the Society of Toxicology’s Toshio Narahashi Graduate Student Best Presentation award, the Arab Toxicology Association’s Best Abstract award, amongst various others. Dr. Sammoura is currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Brown University, investigating novel axonal guidance cues and receptors in the developing nervous system. Today, he will be sharing some of the results of his research about the significant risk increases posed by organochlorines DDT and DDE in the pathological progression of Alzheimer’s disease.
