At our March 12th meeting, the Middletown Rotary Club welcomed Christine Stennings, President of the Newport County League of Women Voters, as our guest speaker.

Christine shared insights into the League’s non-partisan mission, which focuses on voter registration and education. Currently, the Newport County League has 117 members and actively works to engage new voters. Last year, the League registered 1,300 new citizens at the Immigration and Naturalization Center in Johnston and held a voter registration event at Newport High School, where 68 students signed up to vote.

In addition to voter registration efforts, the League hosts Town Hall forums across Newport County. The next forum is scheduled for April 21 at 5:30 PM, featuring Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, along with Representative Gabe Amo. More details, including the location, will be announced soon.

The League welcomes new members to support its important work. Those interested in joining can visit the League of Women Voters Rhode Island website, navigate to "Local Leagues," and select "Newport County." Additionally, Lois Murray has membership information available for anyone interested.

A fun Rotary connection—Christine was the Interact Sponsor at Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville, Florida, for seven years. Under her leadership, the club grew from 25 to 250 students, helping many fulfill their community service requirements through Interact’s mission of service above self.

We appreciate Christine’s time and dedication to strengthening civic engagement in our community!
